Car Detailing
Last updated:
Swedish car culture has a quietly high bar for how a car should look. Salt on the roads from November through March leaves a grey film on everything; the pine forests drop sap over parked cars in summer; and the second-hand market rewards sellers who present their cars properly — a decent rekond before a sale genuinely closes deals. Rekond (short for rekonditionering) sits in an in-between space that isn't quite a car wash and isn't mechanical restoration. It's a deep clean plus cosmetic refresh that brings the exterior and interior closer to how the car looked when it was new, using the right products for each surface.
A full rekond typically breaks into exterior and interior work. Exterior: pre-wash to lift heavy dirt, two-bucket hand wash, iron and tar decontamination, clay bar to remove embedded particles, machine polishing to cut and refine light scratches, wax or sealant for protection. Interior: vacuuming including seat rails and under-seat areas, shampooing the seats and carpets, wiping and conditioning the plastics, cleaning the headliner, treating the leather if applicable, glass cleaning from both sides and often an ozone treatment to neutralise lingering smells. Engine-bay cleaning, headlight restoration (polishing yellowed lenses back to clarity) and paint correction are additional services most quality shops offer.
Beyond the full rekond, many detailers offer specialised services year-round: ceramic coatings (keramisk beläggning) for long-term paint protection, paint protection film (lackskyddsfilm) for stone-chip zones, window tinting, and annual maintenance programmes where cars come in monthly for a quicker clean. For Swedish conditions, proper underbody rinsing after winter — often at a dedicated underspolningsanläggning — materially extends bodywork life. Leasing companies have specific rekond standards for end-of-contract returns, which is why so many Swedes book one before handing the car back to avoid deduction fees.
A good detailer treats a car the way a careful joiner treats an old piece of furniture: the goal isn't to hide what's there but to present the surface as it genuinely is, cleaned and protected. Unlike cleaning, the surfaces they work on can be permanently damaged by the wrong product, wrong pad, wrong speed. That's the whole reason specialists exist.
What does it cost?
A basic hand wash with vacuum runs 500–900 SEK. Interior-only rekond typically prices at 1,500–2,500 SEK. Full exterior + interior rekond for a normal car sits between 3,000 and 6,000 SEK; performance SUVs, estates and longer premium cars trend higher. Paint correction is a separate category and prices per level — a single-stage correction is 3,000–5,500 SEK, multi-stage paint correction on neglected paintwork 6,000–12,000+ SEK. Ceramic coatings add 5,000–12,000 SEK on top of the prep, depending on product tier and warranty length (1–5 years is typical). Headlight restoration lands at 800–1,500 SEK per pair. Pre-sale rekond packages designed for used-car listings usually bundle in at 2,500–4,500 SEK.
How to choose the right provider?
Look for detailers who publish before-and-after photos of real customer work and mention the products they use by name. Competent ones will discuss their process with you, not just quote a price. Ask whether machine polishing is part of the full rekond or extra; some include light refinement, others charge for anything beyond hand application of wax.
For ceramic coatings and paint protection film, insist on a written warranty — cheap operators don't write them and don't honour them. Finally, check whether the workshop is indoor with proper lighting. Polishing defects are only visible under specific lighting conditions, and outdoor polishing in a driveway is not how a quality finish happens.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a full rekond take?
A full interior + exterior rekond for a standard car takes 4–6 hours. Paint correction adds 3–8 hours depending on condition. Most shops need the car for a full working day for a complete rekond, or 1.5–2 days with paint correction.
Is rekond RUT-eligible?
No — car detailing isn't covered by RUT or ROT because it isn't a household service. Pricing is before VAT (moms) and the VAT shows on the invoice for business buyers who can reclaim it.
Do ceramic coatings actually work?
Yes, when properly applied to prepared paint. They give real hydrophobicity, make washing easier and protect against light contamination and UV. They don't make paint scratch-proof — only reduce the severity of light marring. A 3–5 year coating from a skilled shop is a reasonable investment on a car you're keeping long-term.
